WET Test Sample Collection

  • Each chronic test requires a total of three samples, picked up Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

  • Bottles and a blank chain of custody form will be delivered to your organization one to two weeks prior to your scheduled testing week.

  • For chronic testing in the state of Indiana, a courier from the laboratory will come to your treatment plant on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday the week of your test to pick up samples. On Monday and Wednesday they will drop off the bottles and chain of custody needed for the next pickup.

  • Each sample is a 24 hour composite sample. If your organization does not have an autosampler, collect a one gallon sample in a large container every eight hours for the 24 hours preceding sample pickup. This composite can be used to fill the laboratory’s sample bottles.

  • For an acute test in the state of Indiana, samples will be picked up only once for a daphnid acute test or twice for a fish acute test.

  • If your organization would prefer to ship samples, or requires flexible timing with the courier, contact info@biomonitor.com or call (317) 297-7713.

  • If your organization is outside of the state of Indiana, it may be necessary to ship your sample to the lab. Contact info@biomonitor.com for more information about shipping samples.

Interpreting your WET results

  • After the test has concluded, your organization will receive a report detailing the results of your test.

  • The first page of your report includes a table that summarizes the findings and shows the information your organization may need to report.

  • On the summary page, the lab has factored in your organization’s permit limits to give each test a pass or fail grade.

  • Acute Toxic Units (TUa) is the reciprocal of the effluent concentration that causes 50 percent of the organisms to die by the end of an acute toxicity test. For fathead minnows the acute time frame is 96 hours. For water fleas, the acute time frame is 48 hours. A value of 1 means no toxicity.

  • Chronic Toxic Units (TUc) is the reciprocal of the effluent concentration that causes no observable effect on the test organisms by the end of a chronic toxicity test. A value of 1 means no toxicity.
